Settlers to BladenDuring 1739 a group of 350 people from Argyllshire settled in North Carolina and those numbers appears to be reflected in the land grant statistics of 1740 as "33." That number was the largest settlement because thereafter, between 1741 to 1751, between two and five grants were allowed. In Scotland, quit rents were not collected for two years after the issuance thereof and the average Highland tenant was able to pay transportation costs to America after selling livestock and tools. The genealogist should put on the hat of the historian and research into the politics of Argyll during this period.
The TacksmenThe "tacksmen" collected rents from Scottish tenants and delivered the funds to the lairds. The rise in rents caused tenants and tacksmen to emigrate. Lairds were not grived because they rented the land without paying a commission to the tacksmen. As a result, tacksmen who did not emigrate were lowered in socia status, while the new tenants were recipients of longer leases, were raised in status. The "tacksmen" proceeded to handle the migration process and voyages sometimes paid all transportation costs to America. The result was that the tacksmen were issued many land grants in North Carolina. The high rents in Scotland and discriminary politics continued to drive people out of the country up until the American Revolutionary War.
Ashwood Plantation on the Cape Fear RiverJohn Baptiste Ashe owned a large plantation on the northwest branch of the Cape Fear River in Bath County, North Carolina which he called "Ashwood." Also included was another plantation called "Turkey Point" which was located on the north side of the river; a plantation called "Stumpy Island" on Stumpy Sound, and 2,560 acres on Rockfish Creek. Ashe was doubtless the wealthiest landowner in the district. His children were well educated in Latin and Greek and sent to the best schools in Virginia to learn French. At the time of his death, his wife had already predeceased her so he ordered that a brick vault be built at Grovely and the body of his wife was taken up out of the earth to lie there. When Bartram's Travels was written "Ashwood" still stood because the home was eloquently described in that book and the Bartram family owned it and it later fell into Bladen County. More information concerning the Ashe family is available to Members of North Carolina Pioneers.
The Sea ChestWhen personal property is handed down and preserved by the descendants, it is a special accomplishment. John Brooks Sr. brought his family from England, first to the James River in Virginia, then to North Carolina in Cumberland County where he served as a vestryman in 1754. A sea chest was brought from England by his wife, Susan, and handed down through the generations. On the side of the chest is "S. B. - Susan" Brooks patented some land in 1735 which was located about ten miles from Rock Fish Creek.
